Arthur's actual VC.

Arthur's actual VC - details of the obverse.

The reverse of his VC - on the ribbon bar it states:-

No 3 10133 SERGT A.F.SAUNDERS

9TH SER BN SUFFOLK REGT

In the centre of the reverse of the medal is the date of his heroic action:-

26

SEPT

1915

The medal is kept in a wooden box in a safe at the museum and can only be viewed by special arrangement.  We were luck enough to arrange such a viewing.

When the medal was issued it was in a leather wallet so this box must have been made at a later date.

The plaque in the centre is enlarged below:-

The original cardboard box in which the medal was presented to Arthur is still in the possession of his Granddaughter.

The box is now somewhat battered but his name is still clearly visible on the lid as is the logo of the jewellers, Hancocks and Co. of (then) Sackville Street, London, who made it.

Underneath the lid are the details of the presentation
